A woodland herb, Black Cohosh is used often medicinally especially for symptoms of PMS (premenstrual syndrome), menopause, painful menstruation, weak and brittle bones, and the immune system. It is believed to have similar effects to estrogen, and could increase the effects of estrogen in the body. It is not a substitute. None of these folk uses have been scientifically proven. There is folk use, but insufficient medical evidence for breast cancer, hot flashes, heart disease, memory and thinking skills, infertility, osteoporosis, acne, anxiety, cough, insect repellent, menstrual cramps, igraine, osteoarthritis, PMS, Rheumatoid arthritis, warts, and other uses.
