Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs often appear on barns for their purported magical properties – protection, fertility for livestock, weather, crops, harvest, and many other purposes. They arrived on the scene when German and Dutch settlers first came to Pennsylvania in the 17th century introducing the tradition to the Americas. One of the most notable artist, such as this hex sign, came from artisan Jacob Zook – an 11th generation Pennsylvania Dutchman living in Paradise, PA who pioneered hand “silk screening” of hex signs. These signs were purchased while travelling through Pennslyvania during one of our road trips. They are hand crafted, colors may appear different and slightly variant from one another. They are cut from double tempered sign board and are labelled as 8″ typically, but vary from size and most of what we have are 7 3/4″ diameter or so. Approximated. Artists use high qauality paint creating the art patterns on the front of the signs, back are uncoated and should not be exposed directly to weather. Because these signs haabe been purchased by us during road trips, travelling and displaying at festivals, they may bear some weathering, shelf wear, and display wear, especially if stated not in oroiginal shrink wrap/plastic. These are made in Pennsylvania, U.S.A.
