Description
An old dried alligator head, believed to be a vintage Florida souvenir. Species is not confirmed: it is believed to be an old Florida souvenir and my best guess is American alligator, though a caiman is possible, so it is listed as an alligator-type head, species not identified. The head is dried and preserved with the scaly skin still on, aged to a golden tan and brown with dark mottling. The eyes appear to be glass or marble eyes (one is clearly visible and dark), which fits an old tourist souvenir. Teeth are present along the upper jaw, and the palate shows a fine textured pattern.
The lower jaw broke off at some point and came apart into two halves; both halves are included and are shown in the photos.
Condition notes:
- Brittle with age; the back of the head has some dark residue and dried material, and the jaw break edges are rough
- Natural cracks, staining and wear from age
- Old souvenir piece, not cleaned or restored
What you get (the lot pictured):
- 1 dried alligator-type head with teeth
- 2 broken lower jaw halves, with teeth
Features:
- Head measures 5.7 x 2.6 x 1.8 inches
- Total weight 4.4 oz (head and both jaw halves); bagged about 7 x 2 inches (zip bag)
- Species not confirmed (best guess American alligator; caiman possible)
- Photos show the top, the underside with a tape measure, the jaw halves beside the head, and a close-up of the jaws
- One of a kind: you get the lot pictured
