Photo card of the God Statue Head at Hill of Uisneach, Ireland; close-up. white card, inner blank. Hill of Uisneach / Cnoc uisnigh or Ushnagh, in the heart of County Westmeath, is a 182 meter high sacred hill that was once considered to be the absolute center of Ireland and has been called the “omphalos” or “mystical navel of Ireland” atop which rests the Cat stone, the Ail na Mireann or “stone of divisions.” The mythical tromping grounds of the tutelary Goddess Eriu (the personification of Ireland) where she legendarily met the invading Milesians and the poet Amergin, after much debate, agreed to give the country her name. The site was most famous for the lighting of the Beltane fires and Druidic ceremonies. Geoffrey of Monmouth claimed that the stones of Stonehenge were brought to Britain from the Hill of Uisneach. The site is rather large, spread out over two square kilometers including holy wells, wells, enclosures, barrows, megalithic tomb, and two ancient roads.
